ALEXANDER ALLIANCE EUROPE

Postgraduate Workshop
Going beyond your own assumptions and encountering yourself and the world in a new way
with Midori Shinkai
12 - 14 July 2025
For the first time in 6 years, Midori Shinkai is back on the stage of the German Alexander Technique community. She impresses in the practical implementation of the Alexander Technique with her clarity, purposefulness and directness. Anyone who knows Midori remembers her impressive words: "This is bone and this is muscle."
In her student-centered work, she listens carefully and gets straight down to work, guiding the learners with her touch and instructions to the deep-seated topic, showing them exactly what they need to make their next discovery. The connections become clear, all the senses are integrated, the whole person feels understood and recognizes the connection with their own life. She knows on which level she has to address people and, despite her daintiness, implements this with a power all her own.

Her colleague of many years, Robyn Avalon, raves: "I can only recommend putting yourself in Midori's hands - they are among the best in the world!"
CONTENTS of the Postgrad
Working with the face
Midori sees the facial muscles as "muscles on the front of the head" that have a strong influence on the essential relationship between the head and neck. Many may find it unfamiliar or challenging to work in this area or to give themselves conscious instructions.
Facial work is a useful and powerful tool in AT work with people who experience tension in their eyes, clench their teeth or have problems speaking. It has a particular effect on facial expressions, which play an important role in communication. It's worth a try!
Understanding the senses
During hands-on work, our innate senses are stimulated, our perception changes and we receive information from and through our students' bodies.
What kind of information is this and how do we "recognize" it in the course of an AT lesson?
Midori will examine and explore these issues from the perspective of AT teachers.
About Midori
Midori Shinkai, together with others, laid the foundation for the Alexander Technique in Japan in the mid-1980s. She has been the director of the Alexander Alliance International Japan since 2000 and teaches as a guest lecturer at AT schools in Korea, Europe and the USA:
Her unique skills reflect the integration of different approaches, especially her 50 years of study of "Seitai", which she sees as the Japanese cultural equivalent of AT.
